If I were headed to a Village Theatre production at the Everett Performing Arts Center on a week night after work, I would skip a rushed meal at a full-service restaurant and instead grab a dog at Snax.
Yes, Snax. And, yes, a hot dog.
Snax is the new sausage and ice cream snack place at Wetmore and Everett, right across the street from the theater. You’ll buy a beer and a bratwurst at a baseball game, right? Why not a gourmet dog and Snax’s root beer on tap just before the show?
Come to think of it, Snax is just a flew blocks from Xfinity Arena, where at a Silvertips game you’re unlikely to find a better hot dog.
Right off, you need to know about the outfit that makes these gourmet hot dogs.
If you’re unfamiliar with Hempler meats in Bellingham, be sure to pick up a pound of their bacon at the grocery. You won’t go back to whatever brand you bought before. The company was started by a German guy named Hans Hempler who moved to Bellingham in the 1930s.
For now, just buy a Hempler frank at Snax. It’ll have a better taste and texture than most dogs who’ve ever eaten. The bun is fresh and you can slather on Portland (Oregon) Ketchup Company’s organic ketchup and mustard. Good stuff.
Gluten-free buns, vegetarian dogs, Polish sausages and spicy dogs are available, if that is what you prefer. Next time I will try a chili dog, a definite fall favorite among my crew.
Ask for a glass of the small-batch root beer brewed at Big E Ales in Lynnwood. Bold but not at all syrupy, this root beer has a great old-fashioned taste.
If you have time for dessert, how about a root beer float made with Snoqualmie Ice Cream’s salted caramel? Oh, yeah.
Snoqualmie Ice Cream, made in Maltby, is my current favorite, and right now you can get seasonal waffle cones at Snax such as the egg nog.
Bringing a kid along? Each table is equipped with little slates and chalk for doodling and drawing.
Here’s the price lineup:
Gourmet dog or Polish sausage, chips and canned soda pop for $7.50; dog or sausage, chips and a 16-ounce draft root beer for $9.50; chili dog, chips, root beer for $10.50; and a kid’s meal with hot dog, chips and apple juice for $5.50.
A Fun Pack order to go with hot dogs, chips and soda for 10 people is $59.95, and a similar party pack for kids with dogs, chips and apple juice for 10 is $39.95.
And if you just want an ice cream cone? It’s $3.50 a scoop and $2 for each additional scoop. Root beer floats are $4.95.
Now that’s a fun snack.
