Ambiance. That is the word I would use to sum up Under The Red Umbrella. From the overstuffed couches, the original, well-loved hardwood floors to the antiques, it all oozes charm.
Under the Red Umbrella is a fantastic place where you can pick up breakfast, enjoy a leisurely lunch, have a coffee and read the paper on the patio, listen to some live music and sample some lovely wine with dinner on Friday nights.
The restaurant is in one of the prettiest areas of north Everett at 15th and Rucker. I have visited Red Umbrella many times and have always been pleased with my meals.
My last visit was lunch. I chose the three-deli-salad meal ($8.29) with a chocolate chip cookie($2.50), a Dry Soda ($2.50), drip coffee (8 ounces for $1.80) and bag of Tim’s Chips.
From the available salads, I picked tortellini salad, broccoli salad and fruit salad.
I gave the fruit salad, the Dry Soda and the bag of chips to my son. The fruit salad — strawberries, blueberries, grapes, apples and oranges — was a good snack for my 10-year-old.
My tortellini salad was made with cheese tortellini, pine nuts, pesto and Parmesan cheese, served chilled. What’s not to love about that? They gave me a generous portion and it was filling and tasty.
The broccoli salad included cheese, red grapes, walnuts and a mayonnaise-based dressing. It was unusual and good.
I love the variety of salads they offer and offering the trio means you don’t have to narrow it down to just one.
The cookie was definitely made in-house and I enjoyed it but I found them to be a little cakey. The coffee was strong but in a good way. They roast their own beans in the back of the store. That fact is enough to put them on my favorite list forever. A nice switch from all the industrial roasted and brewed coffee out there.
There are so many options on how to enjoy Under the Red Umbrella.
During the work week, you can pop in before work for quiche or a cinnamon roll and your morning cup of joe.
On Saturday and Sunday, they have a full breakfast menu: scrambles, omelets, pancakes, french toast and eggs Benedict.
For lunch there is soup of the day and all those salads.
They also have some specialty sandwiches ($8.29), like the “brie-zzzzy,” with black forest ham, brie, sliced tomato and lettuce on rye served with a spicy brown mustard and mayo. Or the “downpour,” salami, pepperoni, ham, provolone, pepperoncini, tomatoes and lettuce served with olive tapenade on a ciabatta roll.
You could stop by for a glass of wine with your sweetheart at happy hour or for a full dinner menu on Friday nights. The chef puts up the menu online on Thursday nights. The menu changes weekly.
Also online is the list of the musicians they are hosting for their Friday night shows.
One of my favorite things about Under the Red Umbrella is that they are open until 1 p.m. on Sunday. It’s a little hard to find a restaurant open on Sunday around Everett’s downtown core that is not a chain and that serves breakfast.
With all this variety, you may find yourself going to Under the Red Umbrella time and time again.
