Volvo’s S90 sedan is stretched to near limo length for 2018

A new plug-in hybrid model also joins the luxury car’s lineup.

Volvo’s sophisticated S90 premium large sedan, introduced as a 2017 model from Sweden, is now available in a 2018 long wheelbase version built in China and offering a plug-in hybrid as a new powertrain option.

That brings the selection of 2018 Volvo S90 models to three: T5, T6 and T8. There are two trim levels for each model: Momentum and Inscription.

The T5 has a 250-horsepower four-cylinder engine (258 lb-ft of torque) and an eight-speed automatic transmission, with standard front-wheel or optional all-wheel drive.

The T6 is powered by a supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder with 316 horsepower (torque, 295 lb-ft) and comes standard with all-wheel drive.

The T8 is the plug-in hybrid model, equipped with the T6 engine, an 87-horsepower electric motor, and all-wheel drive. Total output of the hybrid powertrain is 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque.

Base pricing, including a $995 destination charge, starts at $49,095 for a front-drive T5 Momentum.

My tester was a T6 AWD Inscription whose elegance and tranquility transcended mere driving and became personal therapy after wildfires in Northern California started destroying everything in their path, including the home of one of my nephews and his family, in a region I know well and love. Cars are used for vacations and weekend getaways, but for me the Volvo S90’s interior was a getaway unto itself.

Quality of materials used in the new S90 and the attention to detail in putting pieces together are consistent with Volvo’s long history of fastidiousness. The T6 Inscription’s uncluttered interior design might look plain to people who associate opulence with ornamentation, but my eyes saw handsomeness, order and a calming effect.

The additional length of the 2018 Volvo S90 was applied midship, increasing rear seat leg room to executive limo status, and there was still enough length left over for a massive trunk.

Some of the more noteworthy features on my tester include front parking sensors, an advanced automated parking assist system, an exceptional Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system, panoramic sunroof, four-zone automatic climate control, ventilated (and heated of course) front seats, side bolstering and thigh extension among the front seat power adjustabilities, and as always with Volvo, a wildly inclusive amount of safety technology.

The T6 engine is impressively powerful but that’s almost an afterthought compared to the S90’s luxurious ride. This is a touring sedan, not a performance sedan. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. Even if you’re the driver.
