What a great question and what an fascinating answer you’ll find today from Grist‘s Umbra Fisk, who I am once again shamelessly giving the big Eco Geek love because the woman is pure brilliance.
Read the entire question, posed by a person working for an environmental organization, as well as Umbra’s full answer here.
Basically, such a question is not unlike asking: “Paper or plastic?”
Umbra’s answer?
“You are evil,” she says jokingly to her reader. “I publish this question only because I share your dilemma … the way we need to wiggle out of answering this question is to recognize it as a false dichotomy.
“This is almost never a choice the average person actually can make, and engaging in this dichotomy lends legitimacy to a false scenario in which we as a region, country, or world are forced to chose coal or nukes and have no access to developing other energy sources. It is a worst-case, stuck-in-the-corner, fake match-up. … These are not the only two choices before us.”
