How We Ranked Top Online Therapy Platforms
Online therapy programs come in all different levels of quality. To separate the best and worst online therapy programs, we used the following ranking factors:
Licensed, Accredited, Board-Certified Therapists
The best online therapy programs exclusively use licensed, accredited, and board-certified therapists. Suppose you want genuine, professional online therapy. In that case, you want a website that uses licensed, accredited, and board-certified professionals, including a Ph.D., PsyD, licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), licensed clinical social worker (LCSW/LMSW), or licensed professional counselor (LPC).
Custom Matching Based on Concern
If you’re struggling with anxiety, then you want to talk to an online therapist who specializes in helping patients deal with stress. The best online therapy websites employ dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of therapists specializing in different areas, making it easy to pick the optimal therapist for your unique concern.
Custom Matching Based on Demographics
Many online therapy programs match you with therapists based on demographics, age, gender, and other factors. Some people work best when their therapist is a member of the same sex or opposite sex, for example. Good online therapy programs have multiple ways to match you with the ideal therapist.
Ease of Use
Some online therapy websites are tough to use. Others have complex websites or confusing signup processes. We considered overall ease of use in our rankings.
Multiple Communication Methods
Some people want to talk to a therapist “face to face” (i.e., via video chat). Others want to chat with them online, talk over the phone, or interact via email. The best online therapy websites provide multiple communication methods, making it easy to get the help you need however you like.
Hassle-Free Scheduling
Good online therapy programs work around your schedule, making it as hassle-free as possible to arrange a meeting with your therapist.
Patient Reviews
While we tested each online therapy program wherever possible, we also read thousands of patient reviews to determine how patients liked an online therapy program overall. Although it’s impossible to please everyone, the best online therapy websites are backed by thousands of positive reviews from patients.
Digital Worksheets and Other Materials
You may not be interacting with your therapist in person, but you can still access digital worksheets and other materials. The best online therapy programs provide these materials to patients to supplement their online therapy services.
Moneyback or Satisfaction Guarantee
Good online therapy programs have a moneyback or satisfaction guarantee. If you’re unhappy with the online therapy services you received, or if you’re disappointed for any reason, then you should be able to request a refund. We liked online therapy programs that stood behind their services with a guarantee.
Price and Value
Online therapy isn’t free, but it tends to be cheaper than in-person therapy. Generally, online therapy programs are priced at around $50 to $200 per week, including one session per week. Some online therapy programs also have monthly rates and other services. Although we preferred online therapy programs that provided good value at their price, we didn’t favor a specific price point. You should expect premium services if you’re paying for a premium online therapy platform. If you’re getting cheap online therapy, then you shouldn’t need to compromise on quality care.
How Online Therapy Works
Online therapy works in different ways, depending on your provider. Generally, you sign up online then speak with a therapist via phone, video chat, email, or live chat. Here’s how it works:
- You sign up online as an individual, couple, or teen.
- You get connected with a licensed and accredited therapist.
- You can talk to the therapist using video chat, phone, email, or live chat.
- You pay a monthly or weekly rate (typically $50 to $200 per session)
- You can cancel any time, switch to a new therapist with the same company, or pause your subscription
Online therapy websites match you with a therapist based on your concern and other factors. Some consider your demographics, for example, and try to match you with a therapist with similar demographic data. Others focus specifically on matching you with the best provider for your specific mental health concern.
Some online therapy programs are available exclusively to individuals. Others cater to couples, teens, or children.
You can find general online therapy programs that help people deal with depression, anxiety, and other major mental health concerns.
You can also find specialized online therapy programs for people with specific religious backgrounds. Or, you can find online therapy programs specializing in providing LGBTQ therapy.
What Can Online Therapy Help With?
Online therapy programs typically have multiple therapists with different backgrounds and specializations. Whether seeking treatment for addiction, eating disorders, anxiety, anger management, or depression, you should be able to find a qualified online therapist to meet your needs.
Some of the conditions that you could treat with online therapy include:
- Addiction
- Anger management
- Anxiety disorders
- Depression
- Eating disorders
- Bipolar disorders
- Interpersonal relationship conflicts
- Couples counseling
Top 12 Advantages of Online Therapy
Online therapy has obvious advantages – like lower prices. It also has some not-so-obvious advantages – like providing treatment to remote areas of the world to anyone in need, 24 hours a day.
Here are some of our favorite advantages of online therapy:
Just as Effective (Or More Effective)
Studies show that online therapy is equally as effective as in-person therapy. Some studies show it’s more effective. Although some people like in-person therapy no matter what, studies show online treatment is just as effective.
Talk Via Phone, Video Chat, or Chat
Some people aren’t comfortable talking about their issues face to face. Some like to community via chat or phone. Others want a video chat experience. However you want to speak to your therapist, you have multiple communication methods with all online therapy programs.
Accessible Mental Health Solutions for Remote Areas
Maybe you live in a remote area of the world. Perhaps you’re far away from the nearest clinic or city. Whatever the situation may be, online therapy brings accessible mental health solutions to your home wherever you are in the world.
Makes Mental Health Accessible for Someone with Physical Limitations
Some people have a disability that makes it challenging to communicate. Others struggle to leave the house. These people may be unable to access conventional therapy services, but they can easily access online therapy programs.
Convenient and Time-Saving
Instead of driving across town to see your therapist and waiting at their office, you can save time and enjoy a more convenient therapy process.
Get Help in Minutes
Some online therapy programs let you connect to a therapist within minutes. Whether you’re having a mental health crisis or just need someone to talk to immediately, you can get the help you need as quickly as possible with an excellent online therapy program.
24/7 Availability
Even the world’s best therapist can’t be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. However, online therapy programs are available any time of day or night. Some of the leading online therapy programs have a network of tens of thousands of therapists in different time zones, making it easy to get the help you need at any time of day.
Confidentiality and Privacy
With online therapy, it’s just you, your device, and your therapist. Nobody needs to know where you’re driving to, why you’re not available at a particular time of day, or why someone saw you at a specific doctor’s office. You can enjoy higher levels of confidentiality and privacy than you would get with a conventional provider.
Use Any Smartphone, Tablet, or Computer Anywhere You Go
Your ordinary therapist won’t come with you if you’re on vacation. However, that’s not an issue with online therapy: you can talk to your online therapist from anywhere using multiple devices.
Available for Individuals, Couples, Teens, and Kids
Online therapy programs serve all types of patients, including individuals, couples, teens, and children. Whether looking for online therapy services for yourself or a loved one, you can get different types of help through online therapy.
Professional, Licensed, Board-Certified Therapists
Online therapists aren’t random people. They’re trained professionals with master’s degrees and board certifications. All good online therapy programs offer professional, licensed, board-certified therapists – just like the therapists you’d see at an in-person clinic.
Affordability
Online therapy programs don’t need to rent a clinic or cover high overhead costs. They don’t need to travel to patients or hire as many staff. Instead, online therapy programs eliminate much of the overhead expenses involved in therapy, allowing you to get the best possible value.
Downsides of Online Therapy
Online therapy is the best option for many people. However, there are certain disadvantages to consider before signing up, including:
Insurance May or May Not Cover It
Depending on your state and insurance plan, your insurance may or may not cover the cost of online therapy. Meanwhile, some online therapy programs don’t even accept insurance as payment. You may need to pay out-of-pocket for online treatment (although most people pay out of pocket for conventional therapy as well).
Some States Limit Online Therapy Availability
Some states do not allow out-of-state psychologists to provide services in other states. Generally, states require providers to be licensed in that specific State to offer therapy services. If you live in a smaller State, fewer online therapists may be available than those in more populated states.
Not All Online Therapy Programs Are Made Equal
Some of the best online therapy programs, including the ones on our list, provide effective mental health services that are equal to, or better than, in-person care. However, not all online therapy programs are made equal. If you don’t do your research, you may experience subpar care.
Lack of Body Language and Cues
It can be hard to read body language and cues, even with a video call. Depending on your condition and the type of therapy you want to receive, the lack of body language could affect treatment.
Not Ideal for Serious Psychiatric Illnesses
Online therapy is ideal for many types of mental health services and treatments. However, it’s generally not recommended for severe psychiatric illnesses. If you have a tormenting condition, in-person care may be better.
How Much Does Online Therapy Cost?
Online therapy tends to be much less expensive than in-person therapy. The therapist has lower overhead costs, allowing patients to save money while enjoying the same standard of care.
Most online therapy programs cost $60 to $100 per week, billed monthly. However, you can also find affordable options for $50 to $75 per month and premium options for $300 to $500 per month.
Here’s how pricing breaks down among some of the top online therapy programs:
- Better Help: $60 to $80 per week, billed every four weeks
- ReGain: $60 to $90 per week, billed every four weeks
- Talkspace: $260 to $396 per month, billed monthly
- Pride Counseling: $60 to $90 per week, billed every four weeks
- 7Cups: Free live chat with volunteers, or $150 per month
Does Insurance Cover Online Therapy?
Your insurer may or may not cover online therapy. Some of America’s largest insurers announced coverage for online treatment during the height of the pandemic. Some of these providers have rolled back care, while others have maintained it.
Aetna, for example, offers a $0 copay for certain telemedicine visits.
United Healthcare, meanwhile, removed any location-specific requirements for covered therapy appointments, allowing you to enjoy the same therapy coverage regardless of whether it was provided online or in-person.
Blue Cross announced online behavioral health therapy coverage in specific areas through certain providers.
Some online therapy programs are also FSA/HSA eligible, allowing you to pay for coverage via tax-advantaged accounts.
Even if your insurer covers online therapy, your online therapist may not accept insurance as payment. Not all online therapists take insurance.
7 Benefits of Starting Therapy Today
Still hesitant about therapy? Whether you’re getting treatment online or in person, there are proven advantages to talking to a professional therapist.
Let Go of Anxiety and Worries
It’s natural to feel stressed about the world and life. However, it may be a good time to talk to someone if you frequently catastrophize, over-generalize, or engage in all-or-nothing thinking. These are signs that you are cognitively distorting the world around you, which could be a harmful practice.
Regain Hope
If you feel hopeless or lack excitement for the future, therapy can help you regain hope. A therapist will help identify the reasons you feel hopeless. Then, the therapist can help you target and relieve those emotions.
Step-by-Step Guidance
You don’t cure a cognitive issue overnight. Like physical health, mental health takes time and multiple methods. An excellent online therapist provides a step-by-step plan to make you feel better again.
Adapt, Change, and Grow
Therapy can help you become the best version of yourself. If you are going through significant life changes, feel stuck in a rut, or are going through a difficult situation. A therapist can help you adapt and grow through that situation.
Process Trauma and Changes
The events of the last few years have sent record numbers of people to therapy. It’s a lot of trauma to process. Others go to therapy to process trauma or other significant events.
Build Interpersonal Relationships
Sound therapy can help you optimize interpersonal relationships. Human relationships are more complicated than many people realize, and therapists have extensive experience dealing with relationship dynamics, attachment styles, and interpersonal communication. They also know how to improve each one of these areas.
Talk to a Neutral, Professional Third Party
One of the best benefits of talking to a therapist is talking to a neutral, professional third party. You can tell your therapist anything. Some people are more honest with their therapist than with anyone else in their life.
Scientific Evidence for Online Therapy
Studies have shown online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy. Some studies show online treatment is more effective and works more quickly than in-person therapy. We’ll review some of the studies on an online treatment below.
For example, in this 2014 study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, researchers found online therapy was as effective as in-person therapy for treating anxiety and depression.
Similarly, a more recent study found online cognitive behavior therapy was as effective as in-person treatment. Researchers analyzed the effectiveness of online therapy and in-person treatment on people with major depression, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder, then found patients had similar outcomes.
One of the most extensive studies on online therapy was published in 2020. Researchers analyzed 17 online and in-person studies to determine how effective the two treatments provided cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), also known as electronic cognitive behavioral therapy (eCBT) when delivered over the internet. Researchers found eCBT is “at least as effective as face-to-face CBT,” which is why they recommended it to patients and therapists.
This study from 2016 found similar results. Researchers analyzed online therapy in three categories of research, determining it to be “clinically efficacious” and that the working alliance between the therapist and patient “appears to be unaffected by the change in setting.”
Some therapists have pushed back against online therapy for various reasons. A 2021 study found that online treatment can be difficult for therapists. Therapists struggle to comply with state and federal laws, for example. Most states require therapists to be licensed in that State to provide therapy to residents of that State. Unless the therapist is registered in all 50 states, the therapist cannot work nationwide. This can create headaches for online therapists that they don’t experience with in-person therapy.
Similarly, in that same 2016 study linked above, researchers found that patients overwhelmingly enjoyed online therapy and reported effective results, while therapists gave mixed reactions to online treatment.
Therapist hesitancy aside, online therapy is proven to be as effective as in-person therapy for multiple types of treatment.
