Approximately 70% of diabetics have nerve pain or neuropathy. Also known as peripheral neuropathy, nerve pain is characterized by numbness, tingling, or ‘pins and needles’ in your extremities. Doctors may recommend various solutions to diabetic neuropathy – like diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes. Some diabetics take nutritional supplements daily to help with neuropathy.

According to Barton Nutrition, Nervala can “stop the source of nerve pain and damage…so that your nerves can actually heal.” Barton Nutrition claims their formula cools down the ‘overheating engines’ of your nerves, helping you repair damaged nerves fast and avoid further nerve pain.

Nervala uses two ingredients to target neuropathy, including alpha-lipoic acid and benfotiamine. These ingredients target inflammation within your body. If your neuropathy is caused by inflammation (which is often the case), then Nervala may be able to help.

How Does Nervala Work?

Nervala helps maintain nerve health using natural ingredients. You take two capsules of Nervala daily to support nerve health.

To understand how Nervala works, picture your nerves with a small ‘engine’ inside each nerve cell.

Just like every car has an engine inside that needs to work properly to drive right, your nerve cells have an engine that must be working properly for your nerves to function.

Each nerve cell has an ‘engine’ called mitochondria. The mitochondria produce energy your cells can use, helping your cells function and be healthy.

When you have diabetes and your sugar levels are always high, your nerve engines are constantly running on high octane fuel. They’re overheating because you have too much sugar in your body.

Here’s how Barton Nutrition explains the dangers of overheated nerves in diabetics:

“With diabetes, your nerves never get a chance to cool down, and so it’s impossible for them to function normally, let alone be healthy.”

Nervala claims to target this issue by solving the root cause. While other drugs and formulas target the symptoms of neuropathy (like numbness and pain), Nervala can purportedly target the root cause of diabetic neuropathy, which is nerve damage.

How Nervala Helps to Repair Nerves

According to Barton Nutrition, Nervala can help your body repair its nerves.

When the engines of your nerve cells are constantly overheating, your body can’t repair the cells. The engines of these cells are too inflamed for your body’s healing compounds to reach.

When your cells have too much inflammation, your body can’t repair them. That’s why Nervala wants to cool down your nerve cells by targeting inflammation. The active ingredients in Nervala can purportedly cool down the inflammation within your nerve cells, allowing your body to heal the nerve damage.

Nervala was developed in partnership with diabetes expert Dr. Scott Saunders, the Director of the Integrative Medicine Center of Santa Barbara. Dr. Saunders formulated Nervala to help keep blood sugar levels optimal while also targeting the symptoms caused by high blood sugar.

What Does Nervala Do?

Nervala can purportedly protect your nerves from pins and needles neuropathy pain. Many diabetics struggle with nerve pain, experiencing tingling, pins and needles, and other uncomfortable symptoms in their extremities.

According to Barton Nutrition, these symptoms are caused by physical damage within your nerve cells – like inflammation. The ingredients in Nervala can purportedly target this inflammation, cooling down your nerves and preventing them from being “on fire with inflammation flare-ups.”

What causes inflammation in your nerve cells? Oxygen-free radicals cause inflammation throughout your body, including within your nerve cells. A free radical is an unstable molecule that combusts and creates inflammation in your nerve cells. Everyone experiences this type of inflammation. However, it’s particularly tough for diabetics. With diabetes, high blood sugar multiplies free radicals, preventing your nerves from ever cooling down or functioning normally.

The alpha-lipoic acid and benfotiamine in Nervala can purportedly cool down your nerve cells, helping them function more normally. The ingredients shut down sugar aging, which is the cell damage inflicted by sugar.

Here’s how Barton Nutrition explains the benefits of Nervala’s two active ingredients:

“Nervala is the one supplement that addresses the root cause of nerve pain. It pairs two ingredients that keep the nerves from overheating while helping to repair them — alpha lipoic acid and benfotiamine.”

Together, the ingredients in Nervala can restore your nerves and help rub away years of noticeable aging in the mirror, supporting healthy and longevity for years. It’s not just a nerve pain supplement: it’s an all-in-one formula that could help support multiple aspects of health and wellness. Because inflammation affects multiple aspects of your body, Nervala can help support health in multiple ways.

Nervala Ingredients

Nervala contains two active ingredients, including alpha-lipoic acid and benfotiamine. Dr. Saunders claims he added each ingredient at the specific doses needed to optimize the blood sugar fighting, inflammation-fighting benefits of the formula, giving diabetics relief from their neuropathy.

Here’s how each ingredient in Nervala works, according to the official website:

Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant that counteracts free radicals attacks within your body, helping to cool down the inflammation within your nerve cells. According to Barton Nutrition, the ALA in Nervala “gobbles up free radicals so they don’t continue to damage your nerves.” ALA also has a unique advantage over other antioxidants, allowing it to cross over cell membranes and get inside your nerves to shut off the heat. It’s “like putting a double-cooler around your nerve cells hot engine,” according to Barton Nutrition. The end result is that ALA creates a buffer of protection around your nerves.

Benfotiamine

Benfotiamine, according to Barton Nutrition, helps your nerve cells run more efficiently, preventing your nerves from spending extra energy. The combination of ALA and benfotiamine gives Nervala a “1-2 pain-relieving punch” that we don’t get with other supplements. Many diabetic neuropathy supplements contain vitamin B12. However, Barton Nutrition is confident that benfotiamine (vitamin B1) is more effective because of the way your body absorbs it. Your body absorbs benfotiamine slowly over time, enhancing its effects and helping with nerve pain.

Because of this unique combination of ingredients, Barton Nutrition believes Nervala is “completely different than anything else you may have tried in the past.”

Scientific Evidence for Nervala

Nervala was formulated by a functional medicine specialist, Dr. Scott Saunders, MD. The formula contains two ingredients proven to support blood sugar and nerve health in multiple studies, including alpha-lipoic acid and benfotiamine.

As WebMD explains, some studies have suggested that alpha-lipoic acid can help with type 2 diabetes. And, alpha-lipoic acid is used in parts of Europe for certain types of nerve damage. There’s strong evidence that alpha-lipoic acid supplements can help with type 2 diabetes, and several studies have found they can improve insulin resistance.

In this 2010 study published in The Netherlands Journal of Medicine, researchers analyzed evidence on alpha-lipoic acid and found that taking 600mg of alpha-lipoic acid per day led to a noticeable decrease in Total Symptom Score (TSS) in patients with nerve pain. Patients took 600mg of alpha-lipoic acid daily for three weeks, then experienced a significant improvement in neuropathic pain. The patients in this study were all diabetics.

Similarly, this 2009 study found a specific connection between alpha-lipoic acid and diabetic neuropathy. In that study, researchers used the same 600mg dose of ALA linked to neuropathy relief. Researchers believe that treatment with ALA increased reduced glutathione, an important endogenous antioxidant, thereby improving neuropathic deficits.

Benfotiamine is the other active ingredient in Nervala. Nervala contains more than six times your daily dose of vitamin B1 (benfotiamine). In this 2006 study, researchers found that benfotiamine relieves inflammatory and neuropathic pain in rats. Researchers gave benfotiamine to rats, then induced neuropathic pain. Rats who took benfotiamine had a significantly lower inflammatory response and less pain than rats taking a placebo.

A similar study took place on humans. Researchers told 36 patients to take 150mg to 320mg of benfotiamine per day. Patients experienced an overall beneficial therapeutic effect on their neuropathy status, including specific improvements in multiple parameters.

Because of these studies, many people take alpha-lipoic acid and benfotiamine daily to help with nerve pain, peripheral neuropathy, blood sugar, and diabetic neuropathy. Nervala contains similar doses to the doses used in clinical trials and peer-reviewed studies, suggesting that the formula should work as advertised to help with neuropathy. Neuropathy is a complex condition, and Nervala may not work on everyone. However, science tells us it contains the right doses of multiple active ingredients linked to nerve pain relief and inflammation.
