BREMERTON — The decommissioned Vietnam War-era aircraft carrier USS Ranger has been sold for scrap and will be towed to Texas for dismantling.
The Kitsap Sun reported International Shipbreaking acquired the warship for a penny and will take it around Cape Horn early next year on a 3,400-mile tow to Brownsville where it will be scrapped.
The Ranger was decommissioned in 1993 after more than 35 years of service, entirely in the Pacific, supporting the Vietnam War and the first Gulf War. Efforts to convert it to a museum at Fairview, Oregon, or Long Beach, California, failed to gather enough support.
The Naval Sea Systems Command also plans to scrap the Independence. That will leave the Kitty Hawk as the only carrier in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard mothballed fleet.
