INDEX — Authorities believe they have found a Tacoma man who fell into Sunset Falls near Index last month and didn’t resurface.
The night of June 23, a woman reported her husband, 40, had accidentally fallen over the falls south of Index, authorities said. The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue and swift water rescue team members searched the area using drones but did not locate the man for days.
Searchers had found a shoe and a pair of sweatpants matched what the missing man was wearing.
On Wednesday, nearly two weeks after the fall, search and rescue crews recovered a body from the Skykomish River. Officials believe the body is the 40-year-old Tacoma man who fell.
The body was turned over to the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office, which will identify the deceased.
Sunset Falls, just south of Index and U.S. 2, is the largest of three waterfalls on the South Fork Skykomish River. The waterfall drops over 100 feet into the river. The falls are not open to the public, but can be accessed via campground.
