SEATTLE — A coal-fired power plant in Centralia, the only one in the state, will shut down one of its boilers by 2020 and phase out coal-burning entirely by 2025 under an agreement reached between TransAlta, which owns the plant, and environmentalists.
Company spokeswoman Angela Mallow provided details of the agreement Saturday. She says the deal allows TransAlta to enter into long-term contracts for coal power, which is currently prohibited by state law. It also requires gradual reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and provides $55 million in community reinvestment and other support.
Environmentalists and TransAlta have been negotiating a plan to present to lawmakers before a legislative cutoff Monday.
If the Senate passes the measure by Monday, it goes to the House for approval.
