EVERETT — Mayor Cassie Franklin has appointed Everett’s new police chief: John DeRousse, an Everett officer of 25 years.
DeRousse was sworn in Wednesday at an Everett City Council meeting, following Chief Dan Templeman’s retirement.
“Being appointed Chief of Police is a great honor and I want to thank Mayor Franklin as well as our police department and our community for trusting me with this responsibility,” DeRousse said in a written statement Wednesday.
DeRousse began his career as a deputy in the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office. He came to Everett in 1998. Since then, DeRousse has served as an officer, sergeant, lieutenant and captain. In 2018, he was promoted to deputy chief.
DeRousse has contributed to several of the department’s initiatives in his career, including the Child Abduction Reduction Team, the Community Outreach and Engagement Team and the Violent Crime Reduction Unit, according to the city.
Templeman retired at the end of October. He served nine years as chief and 31 in the department.
“The benefit of leading this department today is that it’s not broken, and nothing major needs to be fixed,” DeRousse said. “We just need to keep practicing what we learned over the last 9½ years and applying it. (Templeman’s) guidance will continue to live on in our culture.”
DeRousse moved into his role effective Wednesday.
