EVERETT — The only place to use a U.S. Postal Service box in Everett is now at the main branch downtown on Hoyt Avenue.
The Postal Service is getting ready to close its other Everett branch, known as Claremont Station, by Feb. 18, as a cost-saving measure.
That’s sad news for people who liked the customer service and convenience of an office in central Everett.
“Parking has historically been bad and service slow with long lines” at the downtown office, said Gene Bennett of Everett.
That’s the reason he used to pick up his mail from the Claremont office.
About 1,300 post office boxes have been moved to the main Everett Post Office as of last week, said Everett Postmaster Don Hatch.
Customers who didn’t want to move have the option to cancel their boxes and have mail forwarded to a street address or another box at a different location.
Hatch said people can access boxes from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. so box renters can avoid the crowd.
The postmaster said lines at the main branch are usually not a problem and that most customers wait in line five minutes or less.
People living in South Everett should still be able to mail packages and buy stamps without driving all the way downtown.
The Postal Service is adding two-full service retail windows to a carrier annex at 2201 100th St. SW — just east of Paine Field.
The Automated Postal Center at the Claremont Station is being moved to the Carrier Annex.
The retail counters at the annex should be open for business by Feb. 22.
Business hours at the Everett Carrier Annex will be the same as they were at Claremont — Monday thru Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
