EVERETT — The city of Everett is looking for feedback after it released a complete draft of its comprehensive plan and development regulations periodic updates on Monday.
The plans lay out the goals and policies which prepare the city for future growth. The updates, which are made every 10 years, create new zoning maps, amend building regulations and include plans for increasing transit availability.
Everett has been working on its comprehensive plan update since 2022. The complete drafts, available for the first time, lay out plans for increasing walkability, access to public transit and housing supply. The city also hopes to maintain green space, protect environmental assets and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.
The documents are still subject to the approval of the City Council, which can make amendments. Residents can also submit comments regarding this draft — written or in person — before May 12. The city could adopt the update as early as June 11.
Fast-growing cities like Everett are required by state law to create and update 20-year comprehensive plans.
The Growth Management Act, passed by the state Legislature in 1990, looks to encourage housing development while reducing urban sprawl and encouraging multi-modal transportation. Through those guidelines, the goal is for cities to increase housing affordability and quality of life while reducing the negative public health and environmental impacts of low-density sprawl.
