EVERETT — One of Everett’s most popular walking trails will be off limits to the public starting Sunday and may stay that way until Oct. 31.
The trail from Langus Riverfront Park to Spencer Island, a popular spot for birders and walkers, will be closed for construction projects.
The city’s map describing the closure shows the trail closed from its access at Langus Riverfront Park, heading south under I-5 and along the Snohomish River, eventually hooking toward Spencer Island.
The gravel road to Spencer Island, Fourth Street SE, and a portion of Smith Island Road also are scheduled to be closed.
Langus Park and the nearby boat launch will remain open during the projects.
Spencer Island is one of the best places in the Snohomish River Estuary to see waterfowl and shorebirds. The paved riverfront trail leading to it is popular with walkers, cyclists and skaters.
The island is co-managed by Snohomish County and the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The planned construction work includes dike repairs and ditch cleaning. People who have business at the city’s wastewater treatment plant still will have access.
The timing of the projects is dictated by requirements of environmental permits, which are intended to cause the least amount of impact on aquatic life.
