Today is the 60th anniversary of the GI Bill of Rights.
Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi is marking the anniversary of the GI Bill of Rights by calling it one of the greatest pieces of legislation in American history.
“The GI Bill made home ownership and college education available to millions of Americans,” Principi said.
About 21 million veterans, service members and family members have received more than $77 billion in GI Bill benefits for education and training. The home-loan guaranty program has been used by 17.5 million buyers for loans totaling $830 billion.
Get Movin’ for health
Want to get your kids active this summer? There’s a free, five-week program that offers incentives for children and teens to have healthy fun.
It kicks off Saturday with a health fair from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Everett Mall.
There will be free sports water bottles, pedometers and drawings for a bicycle and a helmet.
Health screenings will include blood pressure and height and weight checks.
There are incentives for kids who are active three times a week for at least 20 minutes from June 26 through July 30: free climbing at Cascade Crags, ice skating and a swim pass or Everett AquaSox ticket.
Call 425-261-4567 for information.
The events are sponsored by Providence Everett Medical Center, Medalia Medical Group, The Everett Clinic, Providence General Foundation and The Herald, which is running a yearlong series: Kids and Obesity, Stopping the Epidemic.
Check out the first two parts of the series at www.heraldnet.com/ kidsandobesity.
Can you give someone a lift?
Our elderly or disabled neighbors may need rides to doctor appointments or to the grocery store.
Catholic Community Services in Everett seeks people older than 21 who could drive others to appointments or to running errands. Volunteers must have a valid drivers’ license, insurance and a safe, running vehicle.
Drive around your schedule and get reimbursed for mileage. Help someone in your neighborhood live an independent life.
