After months of listening to the campaign messages of Sen. Patty Murray and Dino Rossi, it’s now time for the campaign math.
As I wrote in today’s edition neither candidate spoke to reporters in Washington on Wednesday but their campaign managers did in the form of dueling memos on how their candidate would wind up the winner when all the ballots are counted.
Meanwhile, others who are doing statistical modeling of what might happen based on what has happened are forecasting a difficult if not unlikely path to victory for the challenger.
Over at the Washington Poll site, Director Professor Matt Barreto’s analysis of two days of ballot counting concludes Murray will win by 2.8 percent, 51.4 percent to 48.6 percent. His first analysis had Murray winning by 2.4 percent.
And Jim Brunner and Jonathan Martin note in the Seattle Times today :
Murray led by more than 27,000 votes Wednesday night, up from 14,000 on Election Day. If current patterns hold, Rossi would need to win 51.9 percent of the remaining statewide vote to close the gap, according to a Seattle Times analysis of returns. He had about 49 percent Wednesday.
Ballot counting continues today with results from the largest counties coming in late this afternoon starting with King County at 4:30.
