SEATTLE — King County has entered the ferry business.
The county council voted to raise property taxes by $18 million a year. The county will use the money to take over the foot-ferry service between Vashon Island and downtown Seattle, to run the Elliott Bay water taxi year around and to test five other ferry routes on Puget Sound and Lake Washington.
The property tax increase amounts to $22 a year for the owner of a $400,000 home.
Councilmen Dow Constantine and Bob Ferguson of Seattle said Tuesday’s vote would bring back the “mosquito fleet” of early day Seattle.
Councilman Reagan Dunn of Bellevue was the only one of nine council members to vote no.
