Local Briefly: Boy hospitalized after being buried in sand

EVERETT — A 10-year-old Everett boy was rushed to a hospital Saturday morning after his playmates realized he wasn’t breathing when they buried him in a sandbox.

The boy was playing with five other children about 11 a.m. in his neighborhood in the 13800 block of 59th Avenue SE when he stopped breathing, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said. His playmates dug him out of the sandbox and called for help when they realized something was wrong.

The boy was taken to an Everett hospital and later to Children’s Hospital in Seattle, Hover said. His name and details of his condition were unknown Saturday night.

All six children who were playing together live in the same neighborhood, and some of them are related, Hover said.

Sheriff’s detectives have talked to the children to piece together what happened. No children were detained or taken into custody, Hover said.

Lynnwood: SWAT called to apartments

The South Snohomish County SWAT team was called to a Lynnwood apartment complex Saturday morning to find a man who had reportedly threatened an acquaintance, Lynnwood police spokeswoman Shannon Sessions said.

The man was not found, and nobody was injured, Sessions said.

The man reportedly made threatening phone calls and sent text messages to a woman at the Oxford Square apartments in the 4800 block of 200th Street SW.

The woman left the apartment complex after being contacted but called police about 4 a.m. after learning the man might be inside her apartment.

Police eventually talked to the man on the woman’s cell phone. He led police to believe he was inside the apartment. The entire building was evacuated.

After a five-hour standoff, police discovered the man was not inside the room.

The man has a criminal history and a misdemeanor warrant out for his arrest, Sessions said. Police are still investigating.

Granite Falls: Store employee stabbed

A Lake Stevens man who tried to chase down three shoplifters in Granite Falls was rushed to a Seattle hospital early Saturday after one of the shoplifters reportedly stabbed him in the chest, Granite Falls Police Chief Tony Domish said.

The man, 30, was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment of two stab wounds. Police found him about 2:45 a.m. in a vacant lot behind the gas station at the intersection of W. Stanley Street and S. Granite Avenue, Domish said.

The man was in stable condition later that morning, Domish said.

An 18-year-old Everett man was arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with the stabbing, Domish said. Two 17-year-olds from Everett who had been with the 18-year-old man were released to their parents.

The Lake Stevens man works nights at the Red Apple store near the Shell gas station, where the three teenagers reportedly stole some beer, Domish said. The man was outside on his break when it happened and chased the teens behind the gas station, where the stabbing occurred, Domish said.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation.
