Don Beavon’s K2 climbing team is getting ready to make a joint push for the summit with another climbing team.
Beavon, of Tulalip, is with a group of accomplished climbers attempting to climb K2 in Pakistan’s Karakoram range. At 28,251 feet, K2 is the world’s second-highest mountain and one of the most difficult to climb.
A French climber identified only as Hugues reported on the Web site K2climb.net that Beavon’s international team, led by American Fabrizio Zangrilli, and a Czech team planned to brave deep snow to head for the summit.
“With so much snow on the route, we will need to join all our forces,” Hugues reported late Tuesday. “We need to be cautious and wait for the avalanches to sweep the slopes before setting off – probably by July 12.”
A group of Korean climbers also was getting ready to climb the Abruzzi Spur route to the top, after spending last weekend at “C3,” the third camp up from base camp, K2climb.net reported.
On Monday, another American team led by Chris Warner had retreated to base camp after its second summit attempt was again thwarted by deep snow and bad weather.
Several teams from around the world have assembled this summer for attempts on the dangerous mountain, only to be held back by blizzards so far.
