SNOHOMISH — Major repairs at the Lord Hill levee along the Snohomish River are set to begin Wednesday.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is picking up 80 percent of the $892,000 project near the city of Snohomish, the French Slough Flood Control District the remaining 20 percent.
Repairs are planned at two locations where the Snohomish and Pilchuck Rivers meet. They are intended to address scouring damage and the erosion of embankment caused by high waters in March 2014. They include rebuilding levee embankments, armoring them with rip-rap and re-grading the slope. A buried trench at one site also is designed to both protect from river flows while providing better fish habitat. Plans also call for planting trees.
Construction is expected to finish by mid-September. Once complete, the levee should provide a 10-year level of flood protection.
