SHELTON — Mason County commissioners voted Tuesday to cancel the county’s 50-year lease for the site of the Mason County Fair.
Commissioners say the county can no longer afford to operate the fair, which has been held for 101 years. The Port of Shelton owns the fairgrounds, and control of the land will revert to the port. The lease between the county and the port had been due to expire in 2013.
Commissioner Tim Sheldon told The Olympian newspaper that there is interest from community groups and the private sector in keeping the fair going. But he said that with the bad economy, the county has to concentrate on essential services like law enforcement and public health.
