EVERETT — The Monroe High School Hi-Q team worked hard but in the end was outscored at the national competition Wednesday morning.
The 7-member team was not only representing Snohomish County, but all of Washington state in a competition showcasing the brightest students.
Unfortunately, competition was too tough to overcome.
The team scored 32 points in the 90-minute competition which has team members answer questions of different categories such as current affairs, math and literature.
Wausaukee High School from Wisconsin dominated the event with 61 points. The team only missed two of its questions and had a nine-point difference from the second place, Garnet Valley High School from Pennsylvania.
Alma Bryant High School from Alabama earned third place with 36 points.
This was the first national championship held since 1981, according to Amy Hammons, Hi-Q coordinator.
The competition was held via video conference at Everett Community College. People can see the competition online at www.everettcc.edu/hiq.
Monroe earned the right to participate after beating Archbishop Murphy High School and Henry M. Jackson High School at the regional final in March 3.
Monroe’s team includes Claire Chisholm, Eric Grewal, Angie Hayman, Adrian Hunter, Zoe Marzluff, Jeri Rosenthal and Virginialee Tadvich. The team’s adviser is Giles Stanton.
