MUKILTEO — Treadmills equipped with monitors for watching movies, an area for children to build birdhouses and a chessboard big enough for people to be the pieces.
People will find those things and more when they visit the newly remodeled Mukilteo Family YMCA, which celebrates its grand re-opening today.
“We’re excited,” said Jeff Dunleavy, branch executive director for the YMCA. “We’ve got the building ready to go.”
The $2 million expansion added 14,000 square feet to the 41,000-square-foot YMCA building, which was built in 2000. The property also boasts a 20,000-square-foot skate park.
Construction is nearly finished, with only some flooring in an exercise room and some finishing work remaining, Dunleavy said.
The renovations added an exercise room, new fitness equipment, a nutrition center, an arts-and-crafts studio and space to be shared by teens and older adults. An area where young children can be left to play has also been improved.
Mukilteo City Councilwoman Jennifer Gregerson said the YMCA is important to the community.
“It’s one of the biggest recreation service providers in our city,” Gregerson said. “We’re really fortunate to have such a large facility.”
More than 10,000 people are members of the Mukilteo Family YMCA. Membership has not increased much in recent years because the building has been too crowded, Dunleavy said.
Now, with more space, he said he hopes to see more new faces.
“We’ve been trying to expand this building just as fast as we could get this community ready,” Dunleavy said.
Opening today
A grand reopening of the Mukilteo Family YMCA is 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at 10601 47th Place W. The event is free.
