EVERETT — A suspicious device was “determined not to be a threat” at Naval Station Everett on Thursday afternoon, according to Navy officials.
Police radio traffic suggested officers detained several people around 1:30 p.m., following the discovery of a possible explosive in a vehicle near the 18th Street gate to the Everett base.
Everett police spokesperson Ora Hamel confirmed around 2:15 p.m. there was a suspicious device on the Navy base and police were evacuating surrounding areas.
“After thorough examination, the device was determined not to be a threat,” according to the naval station.
Meanwhile, West Marine View Drive was closed in both directions along much of the city’s waterfront.
“One building has been evacuated as a precaution,” according to a press release from the Navy. “All base personnel have been instructed to remain indoors, sheltered in place. Access to the base has been restricted to support the emergency response.”
People at the Port of Everett were also instructed to shelter in place, Port spokesperson Catherine Soper said.
“The ‘all clear’ signal has been given,” the naval station reported around 5 p.m. “Naval Station Everett has resumed normal operations.”
