Police: Impaired Lynnwood driver fatally ran over baby

The child, age 1, was hit in a driveway. A judge set bail at $500,000 for the driver, 45, accused of vehicular homicide while under the influence.

Lynnwood

LYNNWOOD — An impaired driver ran over and killed a 1-year-old boy Thursday evening north of Lynnwood, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.

A judge set bail at $500,000 Friday for Junior Melendez Chamorro, 45.

Around 7 p.m. Thursday, a driver in a 2023 Infiniti QX56 hit a child just outside a home in the 13900 block of Beverly Park Road, according to a police report written by sheriff’s deputy Brianna Perez.

Deputies arrived at the home and found the boy lying in the driveway, not “crying or breathing,” the report said.

Paramedics tried to give aid, but found no pulse.

A resident told police his roommate, known as “Junior,” ran over the child, Perez wrote. Deputies asked where his roommate had gone.

“I don’t know,” the resident reportedly said. “I think he went inside.”

Deputies told the resident to call Melendez Chamorro, the registered owner of the Infiniti.

The suspect reportedly came to the driveway to talk with officers. Deputies arrested him for investigation of vehicular homicide while under the influence. He was booked into the Snohomish County Jail.

After a drug recognition expert examined him, the deputy wrote the driver appeared to be under the influence of “a Depressant and Cannabis.”

An Everett District Court commissioner approved a search warrant to draw the alleged driver’s blood for toxicology testing.

Deputies also secured a warrant for the Infiniti.

The child’s identity, as well as the official cause and manner of death, will be confirmed by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.

On a sunny Friday morning, Beverly Park Road remained busy with cars passing by, around the corner from Serene Lake Elementary.

A neon green sign in the suspect’s driveway, in the shape of a small child holding a flag, advised drivers: “Slow!”

On Friday afternoon, Everett District Court Judge Anthony Howard found probable cause for the charge and set bail at the prosecution’s request. No family spoke at the bail hearing.

Court records suggest Melendez Chamorro had no felony history.

Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated the time of the crash.
