OLYMPIA — State officials say the recreational crab fishing season on Hood Canal will open two weeks earlier than originally scheduled.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has set the crabbing season to begin on Monday, be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday and then open Thursdays through Mondays each week through Sept. 7.
Crabbing on Hood Canal was originally scheduled to open July 2, when several other areas of Puget Sound open for recreational crab fishing. The season got started on June 1 in the South Puget Sound region.
Officials decided to allow the season to start earlier in the Hood Canal area after some recent tests of crab readiness.
Daily limits throughout the Puget Sound are five Dungeness crabs, males only, in hard-shell condition with a minimum carapace width of 61/4 inches.
