EVERETT — People have been receiving scam emails demanding money in exchange for jury service, according to Snohomish County Superior Court officials.
Earlier this week, the prosecutor’s office notified the court about people receiving these emails. The scammer would include a request to send a phone number to follow up. The court immediately referred the activity to the police.
“We want to warn the public about this scam and let people know that no one involved in the jury process would ever call to ask for money in connection with jury service,”court administrator Andrew Somers said.
Somers said it’s unclear if it is a targeted effort toward people being summoned for jury duty or at random.
If you receive a suspicious email requesting money, contact the local police department.
It may go without saying, but jurors never have to pay to do their civic duty. In fact, the court pays jurors, at a rate of $10 per day.
