EVERETT — Skimming devices that steal credit and debit card information are being reported at gas stations, ATMs and grocery stores with regularity, according to Everett police.
These devices, often discreet and difficult to detect, capture card data and record PIN entries, allowing criminals to create fraudulent payment cards.
“We have had steady reports of them happening for years now,” said Natalie Given, spokesperson for the Everett Police Department.
Skimmers are typically placed on card readers at gas pumps, ATMs and point-of-sale terminals in stores. Some models appear identical to legitimate devices while others can be spotted if a card reader looks loose, crooked or tampered with.
Everett police recommend using ATMs in well-lit indoor locations and monitoring bank and credit card transactions regularly. Consumers should also consider setting up text or email alerts for purchases and using tap-to-pay options when available.
“If you feel like the seal has been broken … you could suspect that the device has been tampered with,” Given said.
If a skimming incident is suspected, officials urge victims to contact their bank immediately to report unauthorized charges. They also encourage notifying the business where the skimmer may have been placed.
Anyone with information about skimming incidents or the suspect is asked to contact the Everett Police TIP Line at (425) 257-8450 or Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound at 1-800-222-TIPS.
