STANWOOD — A high school student was rescued out of a car this morning from a slough near Stanwood and resuscitated at the scene before being rushed to an Everett hospital.
The vehicle apparently left the road and went into the water, said North County Fire and EMS Battalion Chief Christian Davis.
The student, believed to be in her late teens, was not breathing when rescuers pulled her from the car, Davis said. It was totally submerged at the time.
Snohomish County sheriff’s dive teams and firefighters helped in the rescue.
“They did a heroic job of saving the girl,” Davis said, referring to the firefighters and sheriff’s deputies.
Emergency crews were called about 9:15 a.m. to the slough near Marine Drive NW and Rydjord Road.
The girl was taken to Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said. She was listed in critical condition.
Rescuers don’t believe there was a second person in the car, but were searching the water to be sure.
Crews were trying to pull the vehicle from the water, Davis said.
The sheriff’s office dive team, a helicopter crew and collision detectives were on scene this morning investigating. Road crews were detouring traffic around the large emergency response.
Cathy Britt, a spokeswoman for the Stanwood-Camano School District, said the injured student attends Lincoln Hill High School, an alternative high school.
“She is one of our students,” Britt said.
