PENTICTON, B.C. — A shortcut from Seattle and Vancouver to the British Columbia interior has nearly been paid off, so Premier Gordon Campbell has decided to end tolls on the Coquihalla Highway.
Campbell told the annual convention of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities that toll collections were being stopped at 1 p.m. Friday.
The 120-mile section of Highway 5 cost $848 million Canadian to build for the world’s fair in Vancouver in 1986. Since then, Campbell says toll collections have totaled $845 million.
The road between Hope and Kamloops bypasses a scenic but longer and slower section of the Trans-Canada Highway through the Fraser River canyon. One-way tolls were $5 for motorcycles and $10 for cars and pickups.
