EVERETT — If you speed on West Casino Road near Horizon Elementary during school hours, you can now expect a ticket in the mail.
The city installed traffic cameras earlier this year and began issuing warnings in April. Now, speeding means a $124 fine.
While lights are flashing near Horizon Elementary, the speed limit is 20 mph, down from 35 mph. The lights will flash from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. and then 3:25 to 4:25 p.m. on normal school days. If schools have a late start or early release, city staff will adjust the times the cameras are active.
A notice of infraction is sent out within two weeks. The camera takes two photos and a 12-second video, which Everett police then review.
The program has been well received by those who live in the area, city staff said in March.
Traffic cameras have become a regional trend. In Edmonds, cameras covering five school zones went live in January. Edmonds police issued over 1,000 warnings in the first month those cameras were on.
Mukilteo has traffic cameras as well.
Everett will turn on new traffic cameras along Evergreen Way later this summer.
