EVERETT — Few new details have been released about a crash that left a 5-year-old girl and a 25-year-old man dead Sunday morning.
“Due to the extent of injuries, deaths and vehicle debris, a thorough investigation will take time,” the Everett Police Department said in a statement Tuesday.
The car appeared to be speeding, according to witnesses, before it struck a tree and a utility pole on 112th Street SW east of Evergreen Way. The impact split the vehicle into two pieces.
Police on Tuesday also confirmed that all four people hurt in the wreck were inside the car at the time. The two who were killed were riding in the back seat.
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the girl as Izabella Torres, of Everett, and the man as Alemayehu A. Derege, of Lynnwood. Their deaths were ruled an accident. That determination is a medical finding that is not a legal conclusion about the circumstances of the case. No decision has been made on arrests or charges.
The man who was driving and a woman who was sitting in the passenger seat are still in the hospital. No details were given about their condition, but they are expected to survive, Everett police officer Aaron Snell said.
Detectives “have not been able to have a very thorough conversation with them,” which has slowed the investigation, Snell said.
This story has been changed to correct the spelling of Izabella Torres.
