KODIAK, Alaska — Kodiak’s average movie theater ticket price of $5.67 last year made it the sixth cheapest city in the U.S. to see a film, according to a survey published on the consumer economics website NerdWallet.
The survey by the Council for Community and Economic Research looked at last year’s prices for the cost of a movie ticket on a Saturday night in 300 cities. The cheapest ticket was in Paris, Texas, with an average price of less than $5.
New York topped the list with an average Saturday night ticket price of $13.33. Miami and Los Angeles weren’t too far behind.
“Alaska tends to be more expensive, so I was kind of surprised to see Kodiak on this,” said Divya Raghavan, the NerdWallet staff writer who published the results earlier this week.
The council’s data collection process relies upon volunteers to self-report information from more than 300 locations nationwide.
Kodiak is among the smallest cities surveyed by the council, whose normal data-gathering cutoff is a population of 50,000. Kodiak was included in the collection because of its long participation.
Kodiak’s Orpheum Theater has added 3D movies and raised prices in March. Ordinary films now range in price from $5.25 to $9, while 3D features range in price from $7 to $10.50, closer to national averages, The Kodiak Daily Mirror reported.
