BELLINGHAM — A man who hit a Whatcom County sheriff’s deputy with a hammer and then was fatally shot reportedly had mental health issues.
Undersheriff Jeff Parks told KGMI that deputies and a Border Patrol officer respond to a mobile home north of Lynden Monday morning on a report of a man w
ith mental health issues damaging the home.
Parks said a deputy was hit with a hammer when he entered the home. An attempt to subdue the attacker with a Taser failed, and other officers shot him.
The 30-year-old man died at the scene.
Parks said the injured deputy was conscious and talking when he was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham.
