Woman’s body found in Pilchuck River identified

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed that the identity of a woman found in the Pilchuck River earlier this month was Kelly Jean Sarsten, KIRO-TV reported Tuesday.

Sarsten, 37, was reported missing on Aug. 19, the day before her body was discovered in the river not far from her home in Machias.

Sarsten’s friends and family assumed the body was hers immediately after it was discovered and left balloons, carnations and roses in an impromptu memorial in front of Sarsten’s house.

Sarsten’s family and friends believe she wouldn’t have left voluntarily without telling them.

The woman, 50, and child, 9, were taken to Stanwood High School, where they were picked up by helicopter. Their medical conditions were not known Tuesday. The intersection was closed down for a couple of hours.

Kimberly-Clark and four environmental groups have reached an agreement that will expand monitoring of wastewater from the company’s Everett pulp and tissue mill.

In December, the state Department of Ecology issued a five-year environmental permit to Kimberly Clark that regulated wastewater discharges. In March, the four groups asked the ecology department to revise the permit. They alleged that it didn’t provide enough environmental protections.

The Ecology Department will now incorporate the terms of the settlement into a revised permit.

Lynnwood: Man shot at apartment identified

A man fatally shot at a Martha Lake apartment Saturday has been identified as Damian Bentler of Seattle, according to the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office detectives suspect that Bentler, 28, was shot by an acquaintance during an argument.

A man in his early 20s was arrested at the scene and booked into the Snohomish County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen said. He posted bail the same day, she said.
