As we all observe the devastation in the Southeast United States from Hurricane Helene, we also have seen more than 3,500 personnel from across the federal workforce deployed to disaster response efforts. As a 30-year (retired) federal scientist, and member of the nonpartisan National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), I have witnessed the work of these federal employees up close, both every day and in times of crisis. Here in Washington, with our special vulnerabilities to weather and geologic hazards, we should all appreciate and support our federal civil service workforce.
In the coming weeks, as we choose our president and Congressional representatives, I urge everyone to vote for leaders that will support the federal employees we depend on every day, and especially in time of need. As we’ve seen in the Hurricane Helene response, your livelihood and life may depend on their important work!
