Regarding the current crop of letters discussing the need for help for the handicapped in pumping gas, help already exists, at least for people who purchase gas at Costco. All Costco gas pumps have a blue Handicap Assistance button on every gas pump, which will summon the gas attendant for help in filling your tank. Unfortunately, Costco may not be as readily accessible as most other gas stations as there isn’t a Costco on every street corner, and they aren’t open 24 hours a day. Also, not everyone might be able to afford the $55 per year membership fee, but this cost is mitigated by the consistent savings at the pump — Costco is almost always the lowest priced gas in the area.
Other than this, I suggest that handicapped and elderly customers complain consistently to gas station managers, and to the oil companies themselves to petition for some kind of call system at gas stations. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, you just have to squeak a lot.
