It is sad to see in a recent letter to the editor, a supposedly well-educated adult call man-made climate change a hoax. There is overwhelming scientific evidence that fossil fuel emissions are driving climate change and contributing to the increased frequency of hurricanes, floods and wildfires. It is all fact-based on atmospheric chemistry and world-wide data collection and analysis.
As a practicing civil engineer and professional hydrologist with over 50 years of experience, in my work I see the impact of changing long-term meteorological trends on our natural and urban environments. It is important that we recognize and plan for these climate changes today and in the future.
Teaching our children about this subject is just one step in confronting these challenges. Our older generation will soon be gone. But our children and grandchildren will have to live with what we do or don’t do to address this problem. To bury our heads in the sand and pretend that this is all just a hoax truly signals the end of the Age of Reason.
