A front page article in the June 12 edition of The Herald, titled “Builders primed to fight report,” is worthy of a reply. In the article is the concept that there will not be enough land to house new residents who move to this location, as well as resident young persons who wish to build and live here.
I agree with that statement. The statement in my mind is: Overpopulation is already a severe problem in Snohomish County. Our intense preoccupation with traffic congestion is one direct support for that concern. Solutions to that problem seem to inevitably center on “more lanes for vehicles.” Now the builders are saying, “More residences for more population.”
I am only equipped with a bachelor’s degree from a four-year college, and also have three years of graduate college and university work in my rsum. That may not be enough to understand why we must provide more housing to attract more population to our area. It seems to me in my limited understanding that, if residences are in short supply, it would be a signal to would-be residents to this area to go elsewhere for housing, thus relieving the many problems which accrue from overpopulation. I can also understand why the builders are concerned about efforts to reduce the environmental and social damage which accrue from overpopulation. The issue for them, I have a hunch, is financial profit.
Admittedly the answers to that dilemma are difficult to determine. I feel that attracting more persons to the area because there is housing here is counterproductive, and worthy of more constructive and sane decisions than allowing unlimited residence building to occur.
