In response to a reader’s positive comments in letters to the editor on Herald Columnist Todd Welch, I agree. I’ve made positive comments on his addition as well and I’ve always been a fan of Charles Krauthammer as well as George Will and other conservative voices.
What I’d like to comment on is what I see as conservatives presently not seemingly able to live in the real world. Don’t get me wrong, a one-party system is a recipe for something worse than awful tasting. And the liberal agenda is often full of hubris. But I’ll bet the farm that this reader voted for Trump and to this day feels we are now far better off with the GOP capitulating to him than to let those contemptuous liberals be in charge.
It feels to me that this culture war, political divide or whatever one cares to label it, is between those making an attempt to live in reality, face facts and those who believe so much in their side they are willing to deeply self-delude about the simple observation that the GOP and the MAGA crowd have been systematically destroying our precious democracy. I feel everything this letter writer has to say means nothing until he stops pretending what he wants to be true is not insane. I’m afraid this is the way anyone trying to live in reality sees America these days.
