My wife worked for The Herald for over 20 years. At that time, I was a struggling small business owner.
I wanted to share my thoughts on taxation on the internet and social media sites (“Keep journalism vital with state grant program,” The Herald, March 21). How could social media and search engine platforms not pay for the news they post from the newspapers? That’s outrageous! I think if they post the news they should pay for it. To not do so is just like stealing.
Google made $4.7 million in 2019 from advertising on news stories. Why should they not pay a modest tax? In fact, they should pay a heavy tax if they are to continue filching for free by crawling the net.
The Herald provided a decent living for all that worked for them, my family included. Congress needs to pass the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act. Are we the American people going to be threatened by Meta’s Facebook and all the billionaires of the world? I don’t think so.
