In response to the recent editorial about a switch away from a gas tax (“Steer clear of state’s gas tax dead end,” The Herald, Feb. 22) to a tax-by-mile will only work if the state keeps it simple.
Electric vehicle owners do need to pay their fair share. To keep it simple, I suggest they be charged a flat surcharge for annual license renewal.
Let hybrid and gas-diesel vehicles continue to pay for road use via per gallon tax. You still won’t capture the out-of-state EVs, but you will collect some gas tax on others, including government and other exempt vehicles.
