In response to the Aug. 23 letter, “There is no sport to animal suffering”:
On the face of that statement most of us would agree. The problem with PETA’s interpretation is that they would include all hunting and fishing as cruel and not as sport. These people want the U.S. to be like some parts of Europe that actually have given animals rights (as in rights given to people). Animals are not people. They are animals!
If animals were given rights as if they were people, there would be no hunting, fishing, eating or wearing of anything made from animals.
In my opinion, this is not only silly, but seems more “touchy, feely” than practical. People from time past as well as into the future will enjoy not only hunting and fishing, but wearing leather, wool or using down products.
By the way, aren’t these the same people who killed and stuffed dogs into a Dumpster that they didn’t want to deal with? I believe most people remember the incident and that a number of PETA members were prosecuted for this crime. PETA is hardly one to be preaching to us about kindness to animals, at least not after incidents like this.
To many people, PETA is not only intolerant of others’ views but hypocritical when it comes to the treatment of animals in their care.
