As a constituent of Rep. Darya Farivar, D-Seattle, I want to thank her for her powerful words in support of Senate Bill 5065, which would ban elephant performances in Washington. I’ve been following this bill closely, and as someone who believes these acts are a form of modern slavery, I was moved by her statement at the public hearing on March 27: “Businesses that are really torturing animals in such a way really have no place in Washington state; and this legislation makes that clear.”
Hobbling and forcing wild animals to perform is not entertainment; it’s cruelty. I’m proud to have a representative who sees through the circus industry’s façade and stands up for animals and is also willing to put their reputation on the line while fighting for what they believe in.
