State’s telecomm deregulation means no chance to challenge rates

Recent news from Ziply Fiber tells me I can save $10 a month if I go to their auto-pay system. This is of course the trend, to take your monthly payment automatically from one’s checking account. This is their way of saying we’ll raise your bill by $10 a month if you don’t sign up, which is exactly what they have done.

Since Washington state deregulated its oversight of telecommunications, these companies can charge whatever they choose, no questions asked. According to the Washington State Utilities Commission, they have no jurisdiction over rates. Only other matters related to billing, service etc. Comcast is another example of out-of-control rates.

So dear consumers, you are at their mercy if you still want or need a land line telephone. Many folks are switching to cell phone only, not always reliable. Yes, the point is we have no other choice. Ziply holds the monopoly on wire lines. What to do? Bring back regulation of all utilities!
