When more than 50 students fail a graduation qualifying assignment those students are not perpetrators, they are victims. Pending graduates who have struggled through all the turmoil of secondary education deserve and are entitled to reasonable graduation requirements. The buck stops with the teachers. It is their primary responsibility to see that each individual eligible to graduate with their class does so. If an assignment does not allow the teachers the opportunity to adequately supervise a successful outcome for each student, then the assignment is bad. If the assignment is a reasonable requirement, and the teacher does not adequately supervise each student to a successful outcome, then the buck stops with the teacher. At Jackson High, the number was 51. The number stands out. Clearly, the students are victims. You don’t punish victims. Those truly responsible, however, should be held accountable.
