A recent letter to the editor accused Herald columnist Sid Schwab of “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” which is just a bumper sticker platitude providing shelter to excuse Donald Trump for his abuses.
I really enjoy Schwab’s columns. He is on point. A period of retribution, vengeance, hate and incompetence promulgated by Trump and his minions await us. In his recent column, Sid said “Whatever happens, however dictatorial, it’s what the voting majority wants, and I’ll have to live with that.”
Remember, Hitler too was voted in by a democratic Weimar Republic using many of the same pitches employed by Trump: economic recovery and national rejuvenation. Then Hitler got the Enabling Act of 1933 passed to give himself “emergency powers,” went to war with the rest of the world, and we know the rest. Or do we? I think the parallels to Hitler will only grow in short order. Trump will soon show us the clear threat to our democracy that he poses. And his presidency will demonstrate our inability to learn the lessons of history.
