Try volunteering if you want to coach

On Saturday I went to watch some little 5- and 6-year-olds in Granite Falls playing soccer. They were having a great time and doing well until one father arrived. For some reason he felt that he needed to stand right next to the coach and start bellowing out plays for the children. He was totally usurping what the coach was telling the children. The coach, being a gentleman, did not say a word to this fellow. Several of the parents were obviously not happy with this man. When one of the spectators told the man to let the coach do his job, he became offended and continued his behavior.

I would like to remind parents that these coaches and referees are volunteering to do this work with your kids. They are sacrificing their days off to volunteer, and trying to help the kids to not only learn the game, but to enjoy it. Let the parents cheer the children on, but allow the coach and referee to do the game plays. And, support these men and women. If you want to be a coach – volunteer, don’t take over someone else’s job.

Thank God for these men and women who give of their time and energy to work with children. And, it shouldn’t be about winning the game at this age – it should be about playing together, learning the game and having fun.
