In regards to the debate as to whether our government is a republic or a democracy: a republic is a form of government where the power is held by the people through elected representatives. A democracy is a system of government where power ultimately resides in the people, who exercise it through voting and electing representatives. So, the United States is both a republic and a democracy; at least, for now.
