To lose the University Book Store in Mill Creek is a devastating loss. It is so vital to our Mill Creek Town Center and community.
The book store promotes reading books by having:
• Staff with excellent book recommendations for adults, teens and children;
• Books for book groups to discuss;
• Story telling times where books are read to children;
• Inviting authors to discuss their books and interact with the community;
• A variety of classes from art to writing promoting books;
• Inventive displays to promote reading; and
• An inviting place to enjoy exploring new books available.
Its staff has provided support to community programs that promote early literacy for children and families. For some of these families this might be the first book they have in their homes.
The UW Book Store has sponsored book drives, selected and ordered specific books for these children, assisted with the Read Across America-Dr. Seuss Day, and donated funding from its Glassybaby Pop Up sales to purchase books for the Reach Out and Read program sponsored by the Providence General Children’s Association and the Summer Reading Program at the Refugee and Immigrant Services Northwest.
The Mill Creek book store has brought people into the Mill Creek Town Center as a great place to meet friends, then go for lunch or coffee and donuts. The other businesses will feel the loss. The impact of the bookstore is enormous. Yes, you can still order books online, but you don’t get to enjoy exploring all the new books available. I’ll miss having Eve (one of the book store staff) run up and find me just the right book. I’ll miss reading all the staff recommendations and Book Club Best Titles. I’ll miss taking my grandchildren to the bookstore as one of the most important bonding experiences a grandmother can have to share her love of books.
Businesses come and go in Mill Creek, but this the University Book Store has provided so much more in creative gift ideas than most retail stores. It has made a difference for everyone.
