In the Sept. 10 Herald there was an AP photo of two Iraqi boys mourning the deaths of their mother and sisters in a U.S. airstrike in Baghdad. Am I the only one wondering what is going on? Is this how we win the hearts and minds of the people of Iraq? Was this just to be considered as collateral damage? Is this avenging the American victims of 9-11?
The president stands firm that we are protecting Americans. He says we had to invade Iraq and could not wait. He stated that we, the U.S., faced an imminent threat of attack by Iraq with WMD. The financial cost is in the hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars. The horrible cost of U.S. soldiers is now more than 1,000 dead and three times that wounded. Incidentally, wounded can be anything from a bandage to being blinded with all your limbs blown off.
A week ago I saw a photo in The Herald of a young widow who lost her husband in the U.S. war in Iraq. She had recently given birth and her daughter was looking at a photograph of the father she will never know. There is no price higher than that. Are we going in the wrong direction? There has got to be a better way than this.
